Using Your Leftovers and Pantry Staples

Got Leftovers?  Now What?

Do you ever walk into your kitchen, look into the fridge, then into the freezer, then into the pantry . . . and then realize that while there is food there, you have no idea what you’re going to cook?  So, you go back to the fridge, then back to the freezer, then back to the pantry, and finally end up taking everyone out or calling for pizza instead.

When I started designing this course I had planned to teach you how to use up your leftovers, but as I got into it, it turned out to be more than a leftovers class.  We are going to discuss how you can use all of the leftovers in your fridge, but we’re also going to talk about how to use all of the unprepared food you have in the fridge, freezer, and the pantry.  The biggest question you all have asked after reading Grocery Savings Strategies: Let’s Make a Plan! has been, “Annie, tell me more about using leftovers.”

Being able to use what you already have really is one of first keys in saving money on groceries.  Most importantly, we need to be using up those things that might otherwise go to waste: the leftovers.  Everyone winds up with leftovers after meals, especially dinner.  Some of you throw them away and others put them into the fridge with every intention of using them later and wind up not using them at all and throwing them away anyway.

SESSION 3:  Got Leftovers?  What to Do With Leftover Holiday Food

With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, there will be a lot of feasting and even more leftovers.  No one wants to eat holiday leftovers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the following week, so things start turning green and get thrown away.  In this class we are going to apply what we talked about in the previous class to use every bit of the leftover feast so nothing goes to waste and your family won’t even realize that they are eating the holiday meal all over again!

SESSION 4:  Running Your Kitchen with Ease and Efficiency

The more easily and efficiently you can get in and out of your kitchen the more fun you will have in it.  If your kitchen is always a mess, it is not fun to cook in and cooking will feel like a chore.  If you are always cooking at the most tired part of your day, you will dread being in the kitchen.  I have always joked with my husband that the problem with a clean kitchen is that it makes me want to cook.  In this class we are going to talk about the steps to take to make your kitchen run smoothly and efficiently so that you can enjoy your time in the kitchen more or just get in and out as fast as possible.
